Colleges and independent training providers throughout the UK offer courses and qualifications in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning for existing workers and apprentices.  Lists of centres can be found on the menu links to the left.

For those considering career options - the refrigeration and air conditioning industry is a growing sector that offers a host of varied and interesting work opportunities. Refrigeration engineers install and maintain equipment which has many uses - from keeping food products fresh to designing air conditioning systems for people in offices.  

You will be interested in mechanical, electrical and practical work, and be willing to travel and work varied hours. Clients will often have very specific requirements, so you must also be a good listener. Good general health and fitness and good colour vision are also necessary. 

What training is available? 

NVQs (National Vocational Qualfications) Diplomas and Certificates or SVQs (Scottish Vocational Qualifications) in RAC and Heat Pump Service and Maintenance or Installation are designed to support your learning whilst you work as a trainee or apprentice refrigeration engineer.  Students normally attend college on a day release, evening or block basis. It is also possible for experienced workers to have their prior knowledge assessed so that they can achieve this qualification.

As part of this you will take theory exams covering basic principles of refrigeration, energy and environment, technology, brazing, essential calculations, safety, electronics and controls. Candidates also have to produce evidence of how you have applied this knowledge in a practical workplace environment.  The NVQ covers refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump technology at Levels 2 (basic) and Levels 3 (advanced). The awarding body is City & Guilds and the scheme number is 6187. 

Stand alone CPD units are also offered by City & Guilds for specialist refrigerants such as Carbon Dioxide, Ammonia and Hydrocarbon.

What about experienced workers?

Experienced workers can gain NVQs by acreditation of prior learning at an approved centre and if successful, build a portfolio of evidence from their workplace over time instead of attending lessons. You should discuss your requirements with a local training centre. 

What higer level qualifications are available?

A level 3 qualification is also available for those who wish to continue their studies.  Some training providers offer Higher National Diplomas or Certificates for those interested in careers in manufacturing or design work, which is generally office-based.  Some Universities are starting to offer Foundation Degrees, which offer a transition between HND and a full Degree in Engineering or Building Services.  

What are the working conditions like?

Conditions vary depending on what project you are working on. You can expect to be out and about most of the time, particularly if you work for a big contracting company. On the other hand, you could find yourself in charge of a large refrigeration plant for a company or a fleet of refrigerated vehicles. The job opportunities are many and varied.
